Guarana Body Spray by Tame the Beast – Surprising and Pleasing!

Tame the Beast is a grooming company that caught my interest early on.  Essentially, it’s a no BS type of product line with a sense of humor about itself and what they offer.  We’re all beasts and a little something has to be done to tame ourselves back to that proper gentleman for the next business day.  Their cool Yeti beast like logo is highly recognizable.

The folks at Tame the Beast have been busy and it shows with a continuously growing product offering.  Their signature product is the Nutt butter.  Yep!  Think talcum (baby powder for adults) alternative.  But the solution from Tame the Beast is an actual butter (cream) instead of a powder. I fully support their effort in pushing things forward and continuing to search for that perfect paradigm for our nutts.   But the nutt butter is far from being their only realization!  There is a bit of everything: from the shampoo to the shaving suite to the bar of soap.  Kudos to them for going all out.

The latest product coming out of their lab to catch my interest was this inconspicuous little body spray bottle.   As of late, I have been wanting to expand our cologne product coverage.  Scents are such a big and almost unconscieous part of our lives, it is only fair to try to feature more of that in our pages. We tend to forget how important of a job our nose has had during those millions of years of evolution.  Perhaps it isn’t as critical today as it might have been in the past but it certainly does a crucial job of guiding us to interesting places and steering us away from dangerous situations.

I should also tell you that as of the last 3-4 years, I have been drawn to simple fragrances.  Aftershaves, solid colognes and colognes made by Barbers, artisans and other passionate folks who are not necessarily “Perfumers”.  Why, you ask? Quite simply because it is a return to innocence.  Our world is getting more complicated each day and stimulating my nose with simple olfactory pleasures is soothing to the soul.  In that light, working with a scent that has but a few participants that you can recognize, keeps things straight forward and fun.

So when I saw that Tame the Beast was making an entry in the fragrance space, I bought me a bottle to see where this would go.  That bottle showed up today in the mail.  Up front, this is a down to earth packaging. No fancy glass design and no mind blowing box.  A nice black 59 ml spray bottle.  This is very convenient as the bottle is a robust plastic that will survive being thrown in your gym bag and lugged around.

What’s in there?  Guarana, Green Tea & Pheromones!

Curious as always, I sprayed 2 shots on my arms and gave it a moment to come to life.  The first scent I recognized reminded me of a lemon menthol.  This first impression is short lived and something considerably more interesting presents itself, the guarana!  I know I have smelt this before at least in some parts, but describing it is almost beyond me and I am having to rely on a more educated noses than mine.  Guarana is described as follow: rooty, cocoa, tobacco, earthy, molasses.  Now that I have names to .go with it, it all makes sense and I concur! The green tea element complements this by adding a gentler presence

I am not going to touch on the pheromones participation, because this doesn’t have a consciously recognizable scent. Suffice to say that if it does work on an unconscious level, then I am going to want a bigger bottle! 🙂

Duration wise, I am going on 2 hours and I am still aware of its presence. Within 3 to 4 hours the scent is mostly consumed.

Perfumes and fragrances have historically been expensive luxury purchases and finding something that smells even remotely good under $20 has been a rare thing. This body spray thus fits in the rare thing segment!

We have to touch on gender as most fragrances typically have an audience in mind.  That said, more and more new fragrances are not necessarily designed in this manner and follow the basic principle that: if you like it, wear it!  The brand, Tame the Beast is targeted to men, but I could totally imagine women sporting this scent and smelling and feeling fantastic.

In closing, this body spray is putting a smile on my face with its originality, simplicity, sweetness and familiarity.  I was expecting something decent from Tame the Beast, but they have taken things much further and produced something surprising and pleasing.
