Three Flowers Molding Pomade, simply good results

Life has been overly busy these past weeks leaving no time for product reviews, but this morning it was back to pomade testing.  The “Three Flowers Molding Pomade” was up!

As part of my quest for original and old school brands I became aware of the “Three Flowers” brand.  As per the manufacturer, this brand has been around for almost a 100 years.  1915 being the year “Tres Flores” started making hair products. As per the manufacturer, the Tres Flores brand is favorite in the South American markets.  Here is an ad from the 1920’s.

 

Tres Flores is a brand name held by “American International Industries” which also holds the Pinaud-Clubman brand.  Knowing that the Three Flower Molding pomade is made by the same folks who also make the Pinaud-Clubman Brillantine, it would be unavoidable to not make some comparisons.  Read this review here.

When shopping for a jar of Three Flowers Molding pomade, my first stop was amazon.ca which did carry it.   Naturally, I took a peek at some of the reviews.  A shopper mentioned that he tried this pomade as an alternative to Suavecito and that he was now using the Three Flowers pomade instead.

The fact that the comparison was being made to Suavecito indicated that we were looking at a quality product.  Suavecito might not be for everybody with its distinctive scent, but as far as pomade goes, it is in my top 10 and since it is known pomades it also makes for an easy reference point.

 

 

The best price was on amazon.ca and I purchased my jar for some $10 and $5 of shipping.

A few days later the jar was delivered. The Three Flowers jar presentation is nothing to talk about.  It is a very simple and unassuming presentation.  But let’s face it; I am not buying this product for the container it is in.  What’s inside it what matters! The jar I got holds 170g.  In pomade terms, that is a fairly generous serving.  Most jars are 100g.

Test time was the usual fresh out of the shower scenario.  The pomade is a nice transparent gold like colour.  Scent wise, it is very mild.  The actual scent is pleasant and reminded me of talc or baby powder.  It is most certainly a scent of days gone by.  But this was by no means a deterrent. The fragrance is old school, but not Grand Mother like.  Maybe Grand Pa?  But that being said, the scent is so mild that you might only be aware of it during the product application. I certainly could not smell it during the day.

The pomade is a typical firm jelly like goo.  It is firm on contact but it lets itself get worked without effort. As with all pomades, moderation is the best approach.  I used very little to achieve my usual undercut do.  I will say that it was a very nice product to manipulate.  It is appropriately sticky, not waxy and easy to apply. It does feel a bit wetter than Suavecito, but ever so slightly.   In that sense it reminded me of Rumble 59’s Schmiere, which is superb pomade.

As I like to give my bangs some height, being able to achieve that is always an element in the review.  The Three Flowers pomade is very light and sticky enough to allow for some good elevation.  It is comparable to the following pomades in that department: Suavecito, Zeus, Layrite, and Steadfast.  Strong enough and light enough to raise and hold your hair.

The pomades take’s perhaps 30 minutes to dry. And it dries nicely.  Nothing crispy nor hard.  Since it is water based, there is no oily, greasy or sticky feeling.  It feels very clean.  After some 8 hours my hair feels great and my scalp does not feel dried out.  Dry scalp can happen with some of the water based pomades.  The result is an itching scalp.

In the shine department, Three Flowers shines a little bit more than its competitor.  Not shiny as if your hair was wet or greased up.  It’s a totally mild affair.  I liked it and even got a compliment from a hair dresser at Eleganza when picking up other products.

Overall, this pomade wins me over by its simplicity and good results.  It’s nothing fancy or pretentious but it does a great job.  Considering it’s very low cost, it’s great alternative.
