The British PUGGERINO’S water based pomade

March 21, 2019Pomades#FirmHold, #UK, #WaterBase, Pomade

PUGGERINO'S Pomade

As part of my regular product searches, I came across this pomade called PUGGERINO’S.  A totally original name. It’s not always an easy feat to come up with a catchy name that isn’t already copyrighted.  Puggerino’s is a small British enterprise producing 3 products; a beard oil, a supreme cream and a pomade.  We are exploring their pomade.

Puggerino's

Shout out and thank you to Dean at Puggerino’s for making this review possible.

Considering their original brand name, I was also expecting to find an original product, and I did!

PUGGERINO'S Pomade

The Pug labelling is quite endearing.  I am a dog person and have lived with a number of breads over the years (German shepherd, Cocker Spaniel, Husky, Labrador and a few others), but I am not familiar with pugs.  A quick search tells me that they are a great companion bread along with a unique look.  We can easily argue that we would want the same for our hair.  🙂

The packaging is the standard 100g white plastic pomade jar.  The brand colours are white and green.  The labeling is well done with a pug, obviously!

PUGGERINO'S Pomade

Upon opening the jar, you are welcomed by a golden and slightly orange ringing gel pomade.  Then the sweet banana candy scent comes to tickle your nose.  Candy scents or sweet scent is a recurring theme in the pomade community and this is something I certainly enjoy, but I have yet to encounter one with this specific scent.  It is very well gauged –  you will enjoy it but you won’t impose it on others.  It is also a scent that will blend well with others.  In other words, worry not about your aftershave or cologne colliding.

PUGGERINO'S Pomade

The texture of the pomade is that of a thick jello.  Easy to scoop out and easy to relax.  I usually style in dry hair in order to achieve the most volume possible in the front for my pomp and this product worked very well for that.  The product is easy to apply but stuck quicker than I have grown accustomed to with water based pomade.  The styling time is more in line with clay for example.  If you need a little more time to style and comb I would suggest using a barber water spray bottle to add a bit of moisture.  Or simpler yet, blend the product into towel dried hair which is still a bit damp.

The hold chart indicates a 3/5, but in my opinion this is more of a 5/5 which suites me perfectly since I have thick and rebellious hair on top of being a lazy styler.  I like pomades that are all day participants and this is one of them.  The shine chart indicates 3/5 which is accurate.  For a water based pomade this is shinier than the norm and I enjoyed it.  Once dry the pomade is firm.  Not crunchy like gel.

Here is the rating on a scale of 1 to 5, where 5 is a perfect score and/or level of shine:

  • Hold: 5+
  • Shine: 3
  • Texture: 4
  • Feel in hair: 4
  • Facility to wash out: 5

PUGGERINO'S Pomade

On the ingredient front I was surprised to not see ceteareth-20 or 25 which is the typical emulsifying and thickening agent used in water based pomades.  Instead, a sugar alcohol is used.  At 9 ingredients, this list is the way we like it, short.

PUGGERINO'S PomadeIn closing, if you are looking for a nice smelling, hardworking water based product, this understated pomade will be sure to please.
