REUZEL Grooming Tonic – A Slightly Sticky Preparation Tonic
As mentioned in my last post, I am catching up on weeks/months of products accumulation and testing. This post is about the new REUZEL Grooming Tonic.
The Rotterdam Scumbags (Bertus and Leen) have expanded their product offering by adding a “Grooming Tonic” to the REUZEL line. I was made aware of this addition by reading an interview of the guys in the BARBER NV magazine.
Having been impressed with their regular hair tonic, I figured I had to try this “Grooming Tonic”. A number of on-line vendors sell it but it is rather expensive at over $20 in almost all cases. As it turned out, my local ELEGANZA in Gatineau holds the full REUZEL product line and had the grooming tonic for $14. I picked it up on my way home from work.
The main difference between the hair tonic and this grooming tonic is the slight stickiness of the grooming tonic. It is not so sticky as to be the main fixative and styling solution but it is certainly an interesting starting product. What I mean by starting is that I have used it as a preparation before styling. Coming out of the showing I have used a tiny amount of this tonic and massaged into my hair as to give a minuscule coating before using the hair dryer. The result is hair that is easier to work with and maybe even slightly protected from the hair dryer The pomade application that follows is also made easier and more comfortable as the hair is more workable.
A note on quantities, my hair is longer at some 7-8″ in the bangs but I only use a few drops. Be careful not to be overly generous as you will only end up with greasy hair. The bottle has a dispensing nipple that will help with your portion.
I have also used this tonic as a pomade solvent or reviver. It works well, but since there is an element of oil and and tackiness I prefer using the regular hair tonic for reviving events.
Here is what I like about this tonic:
- Makes the hair workable and comfortable
- Give an element of protection against the hair dryer
- Volumizing
- Give a basic foundation for your styling
This product has a scent which is different from the blue hair tonic. It is still very original and pleasant along with a touch of sweetness to it. My nose detects some of the following: citrus, lemon, sandalwood, something sweet and a very light touch of musk. Think, simple, manly and timeless. Granted, since I am using this as a preparation product so not much of this scent is surviving to the end results, but it smells nice during that phase.
