Chicago Comb Co – The comb you didn’t know you needed
A comb is a comb, right?! Well, not quite. There are actually numerous different options out there and they don’t quite deliver the same experience.
Like everybody I have owned and combed my hair with a standard plastic comb. I have also tried some fancier eco-friendly hand carved wooden combs. Then there are the impressive steel combs. The plastic options are inexpensive, fairly durable and readily available. The wooden combs are gorgeous, but considerably more expensive and I personally find that they are harder to wash. Lastly, steel combs are indestructible and have that look about them that says something about their owners – like, my hair is serious business and I will fight you if you think otherwise.
And then there are the carbon fiber combs that you didn’t quite see coming. At first glance they might look like typical plastic, but when you make contact you realize that this isn’t the case. It’s not metal either… what the hell is it? Carbon Fiber! This material offers unique firmness while also being deceptively light. It feels like an incredibly dense plastic with a matte finish.
Shout out to the Chigaco Comb co. for letting me try their “Professional Grade Carbon fiber Combs”.
Carbon fiber used to be outrageously expensive in the late 80’s when it first started becoming available for commercial application. Over the years, it has become more affordable and it is now possible for the 99.99% of us to own a carbon fiber comb.
There are a few hair specific perks to this material:
- Anti-static properties – read that as no frizzing
- Heat Resistant – no warping when working with a hot blow dryer or hair straightener
- Chemical Resistant – the comb will remain in tip top shape regardless of what gunk you throw at it and how often you wash it
In a shop these are mandatory requirements, but considering the affordable price point and durability, it’s an easy sale for everybody.
After working with both the No. 6 and No. 7 combs, I will flat out say that they are my new favorites! I use the standard No. 6 for my sides and the No. 7 for my much longer bangs. The thigh teeth of the No. 6 are perfect to ensure that there are no fly away while the No. 7 hair pick is that perfection tool to provide lift. Since I typically style my mope into a pomp, it’s all about height and volume. This is without a doubt the best pick I have worked with. The combs are light and firm while being extremely comfortable on the scalp.

Plastic combs are usually made of 2 pieces that are then bonded together leaving that unavoidable seam. Those seams have a nasty tendency of catching hair and doing sporadic damage. Wood combs tend to be made with considerably more care, but the higher price point and more difficult caring regimen make them less attractive/practical. Lastly, steel combs offer a real bonus with the ease of care, but their rigid body make them less comfortable on the scalp. No matter how you look at it, comfort remains a key factor.
The carbon fiber comb is that perfect balance:
- Sturdy with some flex
- Comfortable
- Durable
- Easy to care for
Like their plastic counterparts, the Chicago carbon combs are made of two pieces but the seams are barely visible and are perfectly smooth. That goes for both the teeth and base of the comb. They are impeccably finished and you can use them with full confidence that no hair will get caught / pulled out. And they look great too!
If you are a disciple of steel combs, know that the Chicago Comb Co. has you covered with some rather exciting and customizable options. Taking things to the next level, you can also get a sweet leather sheath for it.
The Verdict
Quality! Quality Quality! These are the combs I didn’t know I was looking for! Now that I have them I wonder about what I was using before. I also expect that these babies will outlast me! Yeah, it’s that kind of durable!
