Cock Grease Extra Stiff XX gets a spot on the podium
Today’s post is about a brand I have long wanted to be able to feature on Style4men: Cock Grease! If you’re gonna brand your stuff with such a bold name, one would assume that you have the goods to back it up. In 2017, I was able to get a first try of their xXx water based pomade and was thoroughly impressed, but remained on my appetite as Cock Grease offers numerous other products.
About 2 months ago, I was in contact with the folks at Hair Underworld in Detroit Michigan (US), the parent company to both Cock Grease and Eddy’s De Luxe. Hair Underworld gracefully accepted to partner with us for a review of the Cock Grease products line. You guys rock!
Over the past few days I have been gradually immersing myself in the product line. Obviously, I had to try their water based pomade again and was reminded of just how great it is!
The hold is perhaps one of the most serious I have encountered. As usual I started my day with clean hair and styled with pomade once the hair was dry. Styling in clean and dry hair as proven to be the best approach for good volume. I styled with the Water Type Cock Grease xXx and off I went about my day. Without saying that everything was frozen in place, my style survived the business day. By the next morning I figured I would pull one of my style reviver tricks and simply take a few shots of salt spray to loosen things up and restyle – well. That wasn’t even necessary as I was able to put things back together with just a few strokes of my hair pick. The most impressive thing is that this placement again did nearly the full day without any help. Not many other jars of pomade can claim such a feat.
But let’s focus – this post is about their grease based Extra Stiff XX pomade.
Styling with their water based pomade I was reminded that I was working with a brand that takes hair control seriously. This elevated my confidence to tackle the “grease based” pomades. To be perfectly honest, I hadn’t reached that sweet spot with grease based pomade. Early on in the Style4men project I had a few unsuccessful tests with old school greases. In all cases, they offered little hold beyond about 30 minutes of application leading to repeated styling throughout the day. They also required some adjustments to the hair washing method. Stuff that I didn’t quite know at the time. So grease based pomade remained in many respects a fascination I couldn’t really embrace.
This changed about a year ago when I was lucky enough to work with greases that could handle my hair and that were not melting because of my body heat or the weather. I started enjoying the look and feel of grease based pomades.
I am going to come right out and say it, if this isn’t the best grease I have tried its sharing the podium with maybe 1 other grease out there.
What did I like?
- Super easy to work with
- Offers real hold and doesn’t melt
- Next to no restyling is required throughout the day
- It offers a nice healthy shine
- Doesn’t feel greasy or oily in the hair (I don’t feel like I need to wash my hands if I touch the hair)
- Discreetly scented (coconut and vanilla)
I think I preferred this grease pomade over others because of its higher wax content. The grease offers the shine, but it’s the wax that offers the hold. At 6 ingredients, it is as simple as can be and just the way we like it
Now for the big question, how do you wash that stuff out? You will be using the same products, shampoo and conditioner but in reversed order. Get into the shower but before wetting your hair, poor a generous portion of conditioner and blend it in your dry hair. Give it a moment. The oils present in the conditioner will act as a solvent for the grease. Then add water and massage. Rinse. Wash.
Alternatively, I poor myself a tiny portion of olive oil in a shooter glass and dump it in my hair in the shower. The lower density of oil dissolves grease instantly. Then shampoo to flush the oil out.
In a similar order of idea and this is something I have talked plenty about in other posts and specifically in the post – Relax on the shampoo, man! Basically, you don’t need to wash your hair every day. Many guys do because the washing offers somewhat of a reset on the whole thing and allows you to style into something worthwhile. But shampoos are hard on your hair and frequent and repeated shampooing is in fact drying your scalp out, leading to a different set of issues.
I realized that I could successfully restyle my hair by using salt sprays to loosen up the pomade and then restyle. This is something I had explored about 2 years ago with old school hair tonics. Where I am going with this is that the same is true with grease base pomade and it is in fact even easier to stretch things out. Grease doesn’t fully dry up nor does it seize up. Your hair will also absorb a bit of the grease during the course of the day. By next day, it is fairly easy to apply a bit more pomade and be as good as new.
Many greasers will say that the buildup or accumulation of pomade over the span of a few days will result in an even better look. I will echo that and when working with grease you should go with it for at least 2 days. When you wake up in the morning, you might think that a shampoo would be a good idea but have faith here and apply a touch of new pomade and restyle instead. First off you will be impressed with how easy it is. Then you will be shocked to see that the damn thing look even better.
As with all good things, moderation is crucial! When I see videos and movies where guys are shoving their combs in the jar and scooping out blobs of the stuff, that’s total BS. Don’t do it! A good grease will have very decent hold and little pomade will be needed to get to 100 Good Style Blvd. My upper cut is about 7” long in the front and I am using a bit less than a dime of pomade to do my whole hair. Grease spreads itself differently than water based pomades and will not dry in place quite the same way, so give yourself a chance to get use to how this works.
Another important tip, blending it in to dry hair will deliver better results. Blending it in on a day 2 scenario is even better because there is an element of grit in your mope. This will help create volume. If you are starting fresh with clean hair, use the tip mentioned above and apply a bit of salt spray to create volume and grit before applying the pomade.
Here is the rating on a scale of 1 to 5, where 5 is a perfect score and/or the level of shine.
- Hold: 5
- Shine: 4
- Texture: 5
- Feel in hair: 5
- Facility to wash out: 4 (This is a grease and a simple rinse under the shower head won’t be enough, but you also won’t need legal representation to get rid of it)
To sum things up
This grease has turned out to be one of a kind. The “Keep it up all day” slogan is completely justified. Something I had yet to experience with a grease and this product is changing my views on the whole thing. The Extra Stiff Double X will please a large number of customers with its serious hold, lower shine and reusability. Greasers will love it, but so will everyone else!
