HEADGEAR Molding Mud – Something to get dirty about
As part of my regular visit to OBSCO, I picked up a jar of HEADGEAR Molding Mud.
Some months back I had tried the HEADGEAR Memory Glue thinking it was a pomade but it turned out to be a gel. For a gel it was a good product, but it wasn’t a pomade. During this visit I had a closer look at the product offering and decided that the Mud looked promising. Having recently tried a few clay’s (LAYRITE Cement Clay, American Crew Fiber), I figured that this mud would fit within that space. As it turned out this mud was in fact better than the clay’s. As I mentioned in other posts, wax, clay and pomade are not quite the same things, but are presented as fixative solution within the same space since these products will help you to achieve similar results. What will work best for you comes down to: hair type, style objectives and the actual product recipe. Generally speaking, pomade has rendered the best results for my hair, but this doesn’t mean that the other products don’t have their perks.
Being more receptive to clay’s as a whole, I now had a jar of HEADGEAR Molding Mud to try out. Right out of the jar, it looks like mud. It’s grey and muddy. Quelle surprise! Firm’ish at first but very easy to relax in your fingers and palms. In fact it becomes almost creamy at that point. Based on my past experiences with clay, I didn’t dry my hair as much as I normally would and started with very little mud. I used maybe 2-3 times the size of dime.
The application was actually allot nicer then my other experiences with clay. It went in smooth and it did not become tacky right away. There was maybe a 30-50 seconds gap before the stickiness totally took over. With the other products there wasn’t that much time to work with.
The results are very positive. Because mud is stickier, achieving a slightly messy look is what it does best. Again since it is sticky and very light, this is the stuff to use to achieve some height.
There is a scent to it, but I am totally at a loss on this one. It reminds me of hand cream if anything. It’s not unpleasant and it’s not pharmaceutical like.
A small note on the container, I enjoy the square box like solution as it is different from the more standard jar. Easy to store. It is also a proper portion at 100 g. Considering how little is needed per application, this will last you a number of months.
Overall, I liked it. I am not saying that this stuff will get me to drop pomade, but in the mud/clay space it is my favorite so far.
Here is the rating on a scale of 1 to 5, where 5 is a perfect score and/or level of shine:
- Hold: 4.5
- Shine: 0
- Texture: 3
- Feel in hair: 3
- Facility to wash out: 2.5 (Like other clay’s this took 2 washes to get ride of it and a conditioner treatment was warranted. To date, I have found that anything with Petrolatum to be difficult to wash out. The ingredient list does mention it, albeit further in the list.)
PS – When shopping at OBSCO, don’t forget to mention or use the STYLE4MEN discount code at check out.
PSS – OBSCO will be parting with the HEADGEAR brand, because of difficulty obtaining stock. Getting the product to Canada appears to be a problem. OBSCO still has a good selection of HEADGEAR products so make it out there before it is gone.
