Hey Joe Pomades
Over the last month or so I have had the immense pleasure of exploring the HEY JOE product line. HEY JOE is a Spanish Barber / grooming brand offering products in the: hair, beard, shave and body space.
There is a number of reasons I was attracted by the HEY JOE product line. First off, I liked the hip crocodile. Simple fun. The size of the product collection is also incredibly complete, making it a one-stop-shop scenario. It’s very nice to be working with a frange of products that are designed to work together and complete each other. Last but not least, HEY JOE, offers many of their items in up to 7 different fragrances. This is a big differentiator to most brands where 1 or 2 fragrances is the extent of it.
Here is the Hey Joe fragrance palette:
- No. 1 – Classic Joe
- No. 2 – Red Mandarin
- No. 3 – Acid Melon
- No.4 – Feel Wood
- No. 5 – Sweet Chufa
- No. 6 – Citric Forest
- No. 7 – Fresh Mint
Covering all the bases, our Spanish friends have the following hair pomade options:
- Matte Pomade
- Strong Pomade
- Super Strong Pomade
- Black Deluxe Pomade
- Limited Edition Classic Gold Pomade
Each pomade is packaged in a classic aluminum 100 ml can. The cool crocodile branding is painted on. I personally like this attention to detail as it give the product an extra touch of authenticity.
The whole pomade range is water based, making it a straight forward experience. The Strong, Super Strong, Black Deluxe and Classic Gold are essentially the same foundation with adjustments in the hold.
A while back, I featured a video showing each pomade. Catch that here:
Strong
Scent: Joe Classic (Light and fresh)
The Green jar is their flagship “Strong” formulation. It’s nice to find a brand that starts the counter at a reasonable level right up front: Strong! If you are getting a jar of pomade, we can assume that you are looking for real hold. The pomade is a bright green, making it a very fun product to look at. Worry not, as the colour will not alter your natural hair colour.

Super Strong
Scent: Acid Melon
The Super Strong blue pomade is a notch stronger than the green jar and was a very good performer for my rebellious mope. I used about the size of a Canadian nickel and once styled in place, I locked things with a slight film of hair spray

Black
Scent: Ginger-citrus scent
This is a very interesting products all together. It is a hair darkening pomade. The pomade is entirely black and once blended in will make your hair a shade darker. Obviously water based pomade generally makes hair look a bit darker and shinier, but this goes a step further. Being an older dog, I have lot’s of grey on the sides and it’s starting to show everywhere. This pomade brought things back a bit and looked entirely natural.
I have tried a similar product before which only offered the darkening aspect. The Black Deluxe is essentially the Super Strong pomade in black. In other words, real hold with a darkening bonus.

Classic Gold
Scent: Traditional Barber Shop Bay Rum
The Classic Gold is well named as it is certainly the more familiar pomade of the set. The gold hue is a recurring look with water based pomades. The scent is also along the lines of a traditional barbershop bay rum fragrance.
The hold on this one is between the Strong and Super Strong.

Matte
Scent: Warm Vanilla
All of the other pomades have a decent level of shine. They are water based pomades, so they aren’t entirely comparable to the shine you would get with a grease pomade, but nevertheless, there is a healthy sober shine. For the days when you are looking for that natural matte look, Hey Joe has you covered with the MATT.
The pomade is an opaque white and feels incredibly creamy. It is one of the nicest hair creams I have worked with. Incredibly easy to blend in. In that respect, it felt more like a pomade than anything. Being a matte finish product I felt it dry in place faster than the pomades, but nothing like most clays for example.

In Closing
For my rebellious wavy hair, the top performers have been the Super Strong and the Limited Edition.
Since my sides have turned to grey, I was very curious about the Black Deluxe pomade. It darkened my hair a notch and looked perfectly natural. This one might actually be my favorite of the 5.
Asombroso!!! Muchas gracias Hey Joe!
