King Brown Cream Pomade – The snake strikes again!
As part of the King Brown product line, I had one last jar of pomade to try out; the Cream Pomade. This is identified as a Light Hold product. Over time, I have learnt to look for specific key words like “strong hold” on hair fixative to manage my unruly mope. As such, a product that identifies itself as a “Light Hold” is pretty much telling me it will be a disappointment. I am thrilled to report that this product was not a disappointment and more of a total surprise.
Thank you Daen from King Brown for making all of these reviews possible. Your support of Style4men.ca keeps the fire going! 🙂
As of late, I have been working with a number of non-pomade hair fixatives. Clays are huge at the moment and everyone is making a cool product and in some cases more than one. Creams are fairly close to clays albeit lesser known but nevertheless key players. Creams offer similar natural looking results like clays but are easier to work with. You don’t need to work it into damp hair, you don’t need to blow dry it in with heat. Creams are exactly that – a creamy substance that is easy to work with and blend into your hair.
So what is worthy about the one from King Brown? As all King Brown products, you are working with a quality concoction. The packaging is sublime. In the case of the cream the jar is round, but is still looks perfectly vintage and it is completely unmistakable. This cream has next to no scent. In that sense it is different from other King Brown products.
Coming out of the shower with towel dried clean hair, I applied a few squirts of the King Brown texturizing spray and blow dried it. Once nearly dry I scooped out a dab of the cream and blend it in. About the size of a dime. It needed no relaxing and was a breeze to apply. Front, back, sides. Get it in everywhere for a uniform feel, hold and look. I dried it a little more to help the process along and was rewarded with an awesome natural looking high volume quiff. I have worked with a few other creams so far and will say that the one from King Brown is my new favorite. The hair holds its volume very well, feels great to the touch and looks natural. I also don’t feel like I have to lock things in with hair spray.
Here is the rating on a scale of 1 to 5, where 5 is a perfect score and/or level of shine:
- Hold: 4
- Shine: 2 (this is not a “Matte” solution, but it isn’t a shiny one either)
- Texture: 5
- Feel in hair: 5++
- Facility to wash out: 5
At 13 ingredients, it is a rather short list for a cream and the whole thing is water based. Thus earning more proverbial points from us.
Now having tried the full King Brown product line, If I were to identify their products in order of preference and performance for my hair, it would go like this:
- Premium Pomade
- Cream Pomade
- Matte Pomade
- Original pomade
I am not counting the Volumizing spray as part of this since, in all scenarios, I would use a few squirts. It is thus a constant and a favorite.
To sum thing ups, don’t let that “Light Hold” describer discourage you from trying this pomade option from King Brown as you would be missing on one of their very nice natural result solutions. I will repeat myself and say that this cream is a favorite. We give it 5 stars.
