MD Barber Hairambe – A pomade with a cause
As you might have figured by now, I am totally passionate about pomade and spend a good amount of time searching the web for new brands, amusing arrangements and just flat out rocking hair goo. This quest brought me to the doors of the MD Barbershop where I found a very amusing pomade: Hairambe!
Now, I don’t really follow the news all that much and I had not heard the story of Harambe, a gorilla at the Cincinatti zoo that was put down for having picked up a child who had fallen into the gorilla pit. My son brought me up to speed about the Harambe story. Without getting too far into this, it is a story of 2 “wrongs”. So you are a new and tired parent and bring your rug rat to the zoo. What could go wrong? You take your eyes off the little varmint for 0.0015 seconds and he’s in the gorilla pit! Based on the video evidence showing the gorilla’s behavior, it looks to me that although he was not handling the child all that smoothly, he was in fact protecting the said child. The body language is pretty darn clear!
So who is to blame for the child falling in the gorilla pit?
- The zoo for having an environment where a child can fall into the gorilla habitat – Yes!
- The parents for taking their eyes off their child – Yes!
- The gorilla, for being a gorilla – Not even a little!
And by all accounts the freggin’ kid was fine! He is also now armed with the best story ever to hold over his parents: “You dropped me in the freggin’ gorilla pit and I got close and personal with Harambe!” He will forever be the Harambe Kid!
I fail to understand how the story ends with Harambe having a hit put out on him and getting whacked?! The Zoo folks who contracted out the hit, probably didn’t expect Harambe to have such a big fan club and the whole thing to make such a ruckus in the news. But there you have it.
The guys at MD Barber decided to produce a pomade where $1 of every sale would be used to buy child-leaches to be sent to the zoo so that no such non-sense happens again.
At first, I was in dark about the whole Harambe situation and what caught my eye was the picture of the gorilla sporting a pomp on the pomade jar. Just that alone was too funny to pass up and I needed to get me a jar of that! Yes, I know that probably says too much about me. Eh!
The Hairambe pomade is a an MD Barber product. MD Barber is a barber supply store in Hayden, Idaho. If you are interested in knowing more about MD Barber, this little video will bring you up to speed:
My first test with the Hairambe pomade was as a second day styling. In other words, I had a different pomade yesterday. I slept on it. Revived the hair with the Crown Shaving Texturizing spray and then styled using the Hairambe.
In one word, my first impressions of this schmiere: NICE! This goo has a thick texture. Yet, easy to relax and apply. It distributes well and renders immediate results. It’s comparable to some of my top performers like: Grant’s, DASHU Extreme Red or ELEGANCE to name but a few.
Having recently worked with the Crown Shaving pomades which is packaged in a glass jar, the Hairambe jar feels extremely light. But worry not, it is still a 113 g portion. In other words, a standard amount.
Although the jar states on the lid that the pomade smells like “Justice“, your nose will recognize something between orange and soda pop. It’s mild and won’t clash with anything else you might want to be your main scent for that day.
You might also be surprised to find a black pomade inside. It is important to mention that once relaxed in your hands, the pomade is essentially clear. So in that sense, it is not a hair-darkening product like what numerous brands are offering.
As for the results. I styled at around 7:20 and it’s now 4:30 and things are still looking good. Nothing has fallen out of place. Considering the weight of my hair and its length this is an accomplishment. In my mind, looking presentable is important, but you shouldn’t have to be repeatedly working on it to achieve that. Style your mane and be done! The Hairambe pomade fits that requirement!
The ingredient list on this jar is extremely short at 9 elements. That’s the way we like it. And to makes this awesome pomade even better, argan oil has been invited to the party. If you are regular to these pages you know that argan oil is one of the hair and skin care Rock Stars.
Argan oil helps prevent hair loss by ensuring that you don’t lose more follicles than you’re able to grow – when that happens, hair loss becomes noticeable. Multiple studies on the oil’s effect on hair re-growth have found that it can stimulate the scalp due to its rich nutrient content to produce more hair. Other research has indicated that it helps hair grow faster in a shorter period of time. One particular study out of South Korea found that 44% of participants experienced “clear hair regrowth” with Argan oil treatment – as good as the drug minoxidil, but without the potentially harmful side effects. A simple “argan oil for hair” query in Google will present a number of similar articles. Note that argan oil might also go by the denominations: Morocco or Moroccain oil.
Unlike many other pomades, the Hairambe jar is stamped with production and best before dates. In the hair care realm this is not a legal requirement and a nice touch from the folks at MD Barber.
Here is the rating on a scale of 1 to 5, where 5 is a perfect score and/or level of shine:
- Hold: 5
- Shine: 3
- Texture: 5
- Feel in hair: 5
- Facility to wash out: 5
Since retail is going the way of the Dodo bird (extinction), on-line is pretty much the only option to get your pomade. That makes pricing a two part affair: the product itself and the cost to get said product into your hands. On the MD Barber site, the jar goes for $10 with another $10 – $12 of shipping to Canada. I ended up going with Amazon.com on this one for a total of $21 US because I am comfortable with their shipping. As I have often mentioned in these pages, a pomade jar will give you at least 6 weeks of daily usage (probably more like 8 weeks). If you can get a discount code or are in the US where shipping will be less or free, that jar is looking more and more like an affordable “Go-To” product.
MD Barber offers a total of 3 pomades; Hairambe, the LXIV and the Trumpadour. With names like that, it is clear that Martin and Dave have got a sense of humour and know their history. If these other pomades are anything like the Hairambe, I would love to give them a try. As a side note, they also have an interesting selection of aftershaves. I want to try their Topaz Elite which sounds awesome!
