MOULDER – by the very elegant and modern Hairbond
Today’s hot feature is a brand that comes to us from the United Kingdom: HAIRBOND! The first thing that caught my eye with this brand is the elegant and timeless shield and eagle blazon. I am a bit of a sucker for heraldic symbols. The second thing was the clear, glass-like jar which creates a multi-dimensional effect. Plainly put, the branding is unmistakable and very chic. The last thing you want as a brand owner is for your product to be easily confused with another brand. No chance of that with Hairbond.

Packaging serves a number of purposes. Obviously, to store a given product. What the brand owner chooses to use as said container is an expression of how they feel about their product and by extension how they feel about their work. Based on this beautiful presentation, we can assume that the folks at Hairbond are proud of what they produces and they should be.
If you are a regular to our pages, you will also notice that these jars are a little different from our usual rustic 1950’s Rockabilly-Greaser favorites cans. I am open to all new things “pomade”! 🙂
Hairbond was established in 2010 in the UK. This also coincides with the Barber Shop revival trend as well as the resulting re-emergence of pomade. Obviously things started to make a comeback a bit earlier than that but before we can start talking about a movement or revival there has to be a bit more momentum that only that super slick underground shop on that back street. Bottom line, this puts Hairbond in the early trend setters.
FYI – Hairbond only focusses on hair fixatives and as such you will not find shaving products or body lotions under this brand name. Personally I like this kind of singular approach because it implies the following principle: We do one thing and we do really well.
Shout and thank you to Hairbond for supporting us in this feature-review. Here are the 4 products we received:
- MATTIFIER: ◙◙◙◙◙
- SHAPER: ◙◙◙◙◙
- MOULDER: ◙◙◙◙○
- DISTORTER: ◙◙◙○○
Hairbond uses a simple chart to indicate the hold strength. As you can see, these 4 products fit in the strong hold category. As mentioned in the unboxing video, the scents in these jars are fabulous.
Having rebellious wavy hair, I normally need some serious grip to tame things into a style. With that as the canvas, I started my product exploration with a mid-point option to give me an idea of what to expect from Hairbond and I chose the MOULDER.
This product is more along the lines of a paste-cream as opposed to a pure pomade. Paste is a perfect middle ground between cream and clay. Cream is great to offer smoothness and possibly shine as well. While clay offers a strong grip with a totally matte finish, but is generally hard to work with as it seizes very quickly. Here, the MOULDER was a breeze to apply into clean and dry hair. It behaved very much like a pomade and let itself be styled into place. And the very important element, the hold – it held in place for the bulk of the day. For a lazy styler such as myself, this is perfect.
Here is the rating on a scale of 1 to 5, where 5 is a perfect score and/or level of shine:
- Hold: 4.5
- Shine: 1.5 (this more of a matte product)
- Texture: 5
- Feel in hair: 5
- Facility to wash out: 5
Lately, I found myself being very impressed with this new generation of hair paste. What’s great about this product, it is easy to blend into the hair and provide great hold while offering a natural matte finish. Sometimes you want that shiny greaser look, but it’s not for everyday. For the days when you want that elevation and commitment but without the shine, this is going to be a perfect option. In that light, Hairbond is more of a modern product. Perfectly suitable for going to work and out!
My reference for “hold” is how well a fixative holds your hair in place in real life situations. As in a regular man, doing regular life activities without having a Stylist following him around to touch things up at every photo-op.
I should also mention that paste is a great “volumizer”. In clear term, it’s a product that will make you hair look thicker and fuller. I like texturizers and volumizers because my usual goal is to sport a big pomp. For the guys with thinner hair, this kind of product is great as it will put you in your best light.
In closing, Hairbond is an elegantly presented product that delivers on its “hold chart” along with modern and original scents. You might find yourself fighting your lady off your stuff.
