Rumble 59 Schmiere Wasserbasiert
This is the Rumble 59 Schmiere pomade I have been waiting for. My traveling buddy has returned from the UK where he picked some up for me along with a comb. The actual testing will be tomorrow morning, but I couldn’t resist putting some pictures up and give the first impression. WOW!
The brand behind this product is Rumble 59
Check out their site. It is one of the more original I have seen.
What does “Schmiere” stand for? The translations that come up are amusing and descriptive:
- Grease
- Goo
- Ointment
- Spread
- Mud
I am probably not being impartial since getting this product has been quite an adventure. Up front, it is not available in Canada. It is available through a few vendors in the US, but none of the ones I found ship to Canada. I then considered buying it directly from Rumble 59 in Germany. It sells for 12 Euros on their site. Where it gets complicated is with the shipping cost at some 13 Euros. So 25 Euros total or $37. That is well out of reason for a pomade in my view. Since my buddy was able to buy it for about $17, it was then in reach. I should also mention that shipping from Germany to Canada is not like getting something from the UK or France. The postal services of Great Britain and France have a unique relationship with Canada Post and things get here within 1-2 weeks. My last experience getting something from Germany was some 8-9 weeks. In fact I even considered the parcel lost at that point and mid way in the replacement request process the parcel showed up.
But back to business, first off, the jar is a tad bigger at 180 ml compared to the common 100 ml. The presentation is quite well done with the tough looking parrot. Schmiere usually has a raven as their mascot. You can see it on the comb. The product is an intense green and smells the part too. It’s some sort of citrusy lime. Very unexpected in a pomade but well done. The scent is not overly intense either. We will know for sure in tomorrow’s test, as I have experienced other pomades that had a mild scent in the jar but came to life once applied to the hair.
The feel is the usual firm jelly like texture of water based pomades. Very much looking forward to trying it out.

Testing the Schmiere Wasserbasiert (water based) this morning.
Out of the jar the pomade is firm and needed some relaxing in the palms before application. This is just like all water based pomades. Where it starts being a tad different is on application. It actually felt wet. Considerably more than most of the other products I have tried. At first I was a bit worried/disappointed because this has usually been an indication that the product will weight down the hair and not really dry. This being said, I was able to get some height with it and it dried fairly fast. I was pleased to see that after breakfast, my hair had dried smoothly in place with the desired height and I was ready to face the day.
As part of this test, I used the Schmiere comb that my friend picked up at the same time. The fact that it is metal is for better handling of oil based pomades. The slogan on it goes in that sense by stating: “ICH MAG SCHMIERIG” or I like it greasy. The comb does a decent job. I find that the spacing is a tad too wide for it to be my go to comb – but it is totally fun nevertheless.
Above I mentioned the scent and my curiosity about how this will be once applied to the hair. It turned out to be very tamed. The perfume did not take over and make everything smell like lime. It is appropriately discreet and lets be honest, quite unique.
I am writing this review some 8 hours after application and my hair looks the same as this morning. To the touch, the hair feels very nice. You can tell that there is product, but it is completely acceptable.
Concerning shine. Schmiere shines a whole lot more than most other water based pomades. Is it comparable to an oil pomade? – No! It is completely tamed. But for a water based goo it shines more than the other. On a scale 1 to 5 where 5 is the shine you get with oil pomades, it’s a 3.5 or 4 in my mind.
Will I use the whole jar – yes.
Here is the rating on a scale of 1 to 5, where 5 is a perfect score.
- Hold: 4
- Shine: 3 – 4
- Texture: 5
- Feel in hair: 5
- Facility to wash out: 5
