Suavecito Unscented Pomade – Rocking hard discretely
The Suavecito pomade brand has a earned a special place in my pomade scale. It was my first and it changed my outlook on hair fixative at a time where gel ruled all mighty. In many ways, discovering the Suavecito pomade is what sparked my interest in pomades and essentially led to the Style4Men.ca project. Aside from being my first, it was (is) a fantastic pomade. Even after having tried and reviewed perhaps 40 or so pomades, Suavecito still has kept it ranking in my top 10.
Although, I totally love the scent of the original pomade it is fairly strong and doesn’t fully agree with my asthmatic wife. I have had to use it as my work week goo. When Suavecito started to produce seasonal scented pomades I tried the spring edition and was thrilled to find the same quality with a scent that was more agreeable with my home life.
So when I got the email announcing the launch of their “unscented” edition, I just had to get me a jar.
This was a bit of an interesting purchasing adventure. I have tried to purchase directly from Suavecito in the past, but shipping cost to Canada made it such that it just wasn’t economical. One of my friend was going to Ogsdenburg (NY) to pick some of his purchases and gave me 2 weeks notice while offering to bring back purchases if I had any to make. I jumped on the offer and ordered the new unscented pomade along with a nice varsity T-Shirt. That brought me over the $25 free shipping mark. The shipping was done via the USPS express service within 3-5 days. Luck smiled on us and the parcel was delivered the day before my friend was to be in Ogsdenburg (NY). He uses a mailbox service with a flat fee of $5 per parcel. Luck smiled on us again at customs and there were no charges for these items.
I should perhaps mentioned that I actually had some difficulties making the purchase with Suavecito since PayPal ended up cancelling my purchase twice as the delivery address was different than the billing address. The purchase finally did go through successfully when done using my credit card.
As mentioned, this was a first time experience buying directly from Suavecito. By doing so I am totally blown away by the freshness of the product I received. It is almost to the point that I barely recognize it. The pomade feels soft and fresh like nothing I have experience before with their products. These pomades have a very long shelve life, so I have always worked with a good product, but this time the gap between the making of the batch and my using it has to be tremendously shorter.
The usual Suavecito fragrance is unmistakable and quite potent. This iteration is true to its label and is unscented. You might smell something like a very faint and distant soap fragrance. But unscented is an accurate qualifier. The pomade is clear/opaque, thus not the usual golden yellow or brown as with the regular and firm hold concoctions.
Since the pomade is so fresh, application was even easier than usual. It goes in with minimal effort to spread it around. The results were again in line with my past experiences using Suavecito pomades; a very decent hold. I will make a little point to mention that my hair was held in place impeccably for about 4 hours, after which time it started falling out of place but was still workable. It should also be mentioned that my hair is somewhat longer in the bangs (5″ – 7″) and this is the “Regular” hold, not the “Firm” hold. Suavecito does make a “Strong” hold in their unscented offering.
Here is the rating on a scale of 1 to 5, where 5 is a perfect score and/or the level of shine.
- Hold: 4
- Shine: 3
- Texture: 5
- Feel in hair: 5
- Facility to wash out: 5
Staying in line with their other pomades, this is a water based solution with a rather short ingredient list; 13 of them. This is also using their newer slightly larger 113 g jar. The previous jar was 100 g.
