American Crew Moisturizing Shave Cream – Worth a try!
A brand that keeps coming up in my product searches is American Crew. I have tried a few of their hair products with mixed results. Their hair fiber and shampoo was decent but not my favorite. But since this brand has so much weight and a wide product offering I was bound to have more of their stuff put in front of me. That happened during my last visit at Winner’s where I found a tube of their shave cream for $7.99 which felt like a decent proposition so I picked it up. (I am realizing now that it wasn’t much of a bargain, as this is the going price on Amazon…) Sadly they only had the shaving cream and no after shave. Because it was a bargain I accepted the circumstances and bought it. This morning was testing time.
The tube is fairly generous at 150 ml. The norm is typically 100ml. The cream has a scent that is in line with other American Crew products. Sweet, fresh and manly. A nice fragrance! It is mild enough to not really survive more than the shave period.
I will admit being somewhat surprised by the luxurious texture of this cream. It is thick, with a high content of lubricating ingredient. I am counting some 5 different oils on the ingredient list. The list is surprisingly long, but at least half of the items read like natural ingredients.
Test Stage:
- Razor: Gillette’s Proglide Fusion
- Blade: Gillette’s Proglide Fusion
- Pre-Shave: None
- Shaving-Cream: American Crew Moisturizing Shave Cream
- After-Shave: L’Oréal Sensitive After-Shave Cream
I took about the size of a Canadian dollar. Application goes on nicely. The cream adheres well to the skin and spreads with no effort. The product is white and goes on white as well. This is a true cream and not a gel or gel like.
For a cream I felt like I was getting a bit more insulation than I was expecting. I decided to use the Gillette’s razor since my skin was in need of a reprise after some aggressive shaving earlier this week. The lubrication and resulting glide was immaculate. Just perfect!
Rinsing the razor in between passes went quite well and the cream dissolved easily with hot water. I was shaving 2 days’ worth of growth but since the razor blades were so well lubricated I didn’t have many double passes to do. The neck area is always a little more difficult, but plenty of lubrication was left behind after a pass to be able to revisit the area without irritation.
Rinsing off what was left on my mug with a warm wet towel was as simple as that. The product dissolves well with warm water.
Not having an American Crew after shave I opted for what felt like a similar product or at the very least a neutral product, the L’Oréal Sensitive after-shave. No collisions between these products.
In simple terms; this was a perfect shave. I am surprised with the results as I was expecting an acceptable to decent product, but it turned out to be a very good shaving cream.
