SHAVERBOY Safety Razor Blades – Unbeatable shave for the price
I was recently shopping on eBay for some double-edge safety razor blades. Somewhere in the search, I was presented with a brand I had never heard about; SHAVERBOY. The simple and friendly brand image made me smile right away. I decided to get out of eBay and research the brand. This lead me to their web page. Turns out that SHAVERBOY is a Canadian company out of St-Marguerite north of Montreal.
The SHAVERBOY sales pitch is both short and convincing: 100 blades for $7.95 along with free shipping in Canada and the US. “I’m in!” – and ordered a set of 100 right away! I could have ordered either from eBay or SHAVERBOY for the same price and opted to order directly from SHAVERBOY.
The package showed up about a week after my order was placed. The presentation of this package is very different from all of the blades packs I have ordered in the past. Usually the blades are stacked in a single tower like box. In this case, the box is about 7 inches by 4 inches and each 5 blade packages is attached in a set position. Interesting and different! The box is a by-fold layout. You can see it here below in its folded layout. Inside each 5 blade packages, the blades are double wrapped in wax paper to protect your digits from any unpleasantries.
I was initially fairly hyped to think that a razor blade plant had been opened or revived out of abandon, but no. In this new world economy, very few manufactured goods are made here in Canada and these blades are no different. The blades are made in China for SHAVERBOY. China is known for manufacturing everything, but razor blades have typically come from Russia and countries in the Middle-East, such as Turkey.
Regardless of where the blades are manufactured, if they perform well and generate work in Canada, I will be happy to support them. 🙂
This morning was testing time. The job at hand was a 3 days old beard. Whenever introducing a new element to my shave routine, I aim to use products that have performed consistently well so that the new element under test can be isolated. In the test stage section you can see that I am going with my trusty Merkur razor and some of my Suavecito favorites.
TEST STAGE:
- State: Out of the shower
- Razor: Merkur 180
- Blade: SHAVERBOY
- Pre-Shave: None
- Shaving Cream: Suavecito Premium Sandalwood Shaving Cream
- After-Shave: Suavecito Premium Sandalwood Shaving Cream
My mug being ready with the shaving cream, the shave can begin! The first impression is that this blade is very comfortable. The blade angle is such that the shave does not feel aggressive at all. It reminded me of the Treet blade and maybe a touch better even. In fact, I would say that this blade is an ideal candidate for beginners. Considering that I had a good deal of beard to shave off I assumed that the blade might have some trouble cutting through. Not at all! Obviously, I did have to do a couple of passes to get a good shave, but not to the expense of comfort. This blade surprised me. Usually blades that do not have an aggressive angle tend to not do as good of a job or even loose some of their cutting abilities before the shave is completed. Not here! The blade performed extremely well and felt as good by the end of the shave as it did at the start.
I always like to mention the rinsability of blades. Granted the biggest issue of rinsing the blade out between passes is caused by the texture of the shave cream, but I have come to realize that the blades are coated with a number of products. These coatings serve a number of purposes: strengthening the blade, preventing it from rusting, ceiling the printed material and so on. What I came to appreciate is that the coatings also impact how well you can rinse off the shaving cream. The Suavecito cream is a thick one and it rinsed off nicely under hot water.
As you might have already read in my previous blade reviews, I usually use a blade only once. Having sensitive skin, I am concerned with having a clean and sharp blade for every shave. The relative low cost of safety razor blades makes this possible. Therefore having a perfect shave every day is an affordable reality.
This is the unfolded box.
To release each 5 blades package, simply slide the box off of its holder.
In closing, the SHAVERBOY blades are smooth and comfortable while performing very well. At this price-point I am not aware of a better option out there.
