Cassette Razor by Every Man Jack
Style4men.ca has two main areas of interest; hair pomade and wet shaving. As part of the wet shaving side of our reviews, we have been trying out more razors these past weeks. About 5 or 6 years ago, I moved away from cassettes razors and fully embraced the safety razor / double edge blade approach to wet shaving. Basically shaving like its 1918 (#shavelikeits1918). But over the course of the last year, a number of interesting new cassette razors have hit the market. I recently tried the cool bamboo handle razor by the folks at Bull Dog. Another new and exciting razor is by none other than Every Man Jack.
With brands like Harry’s, Dollar Shave Club and now Gillette’s also changing its game plan, what could Every Man Jack bring to the table? Glad you asked!
There are two main things that are different about this razor:
- Rectangle shaped handle
- Heavy weight
At some 71 gr on my very scientific kitchen scale, this razor is comparable to an all steel old school safety razor. The rectangle handle shape is also a worthy difference. The only other shape out there is round or oval like. Considering how you we hold a razor, I suspect that this shape will be quite agreeable. The razor handle is metal based with a few rubber contact points, making it heavy, comfortable and secure in your hand.
To my knowledge the only other razor resembling this shape is the Bolin Webb, but the price tag on that is more along the line of a bi-weekly car payment. While the Every Man Jack razor is in that humble $20 ball park and available in Canada at: Walmart, Rexall and Shopper’s Drug Mart (Pharmaprix in Quebec).
The razor also comes with 4 cassettes. That’s essentially setting you up for a number of months. Other brand out there will either give 1 or 2 cassettes.
Onto the shave! As expected the heavy weight of the razor make it perfectly comfortable to work with. It is also well balanced allowing it to be easily maneuvered around the curves of your mug. The square or rectangular shape of the handle adds to the comfort and control when shaving. The razor is thus very securely pinched by your fingers. This give a bonus sense of security as you will be quite confident that the razor will not slip allowing for very precise movements.

- After-Shave: Every Man Jack
As for the razor head: It is a pivoting design which lends itself perfectly to follow the contour of your face. It had great movement.
I was shaving perhaps 5 or 6 days’ worth of growth which made for a good test. The beard was efficiently shaved off and was rather comfortable. No nick no cuts.
This cassette is holding 6 blades, making it a tightly packed head. On my first shave with this razor, I was thinking that the 6th blade might have been a smidgen too much for my needs. As I was tackling a dense beard, the blades were working in a rough terrain and I had a few instance of slight tugging. Not that the blades had any real trouble cutting through. It is more that it felt like the beard was getting caught before being sliced off. Fast forward to 6-7 shaves later and I am loving this razor. Like many things, there is an adaptation period. Yes, the 6 blades makes it a tad different, but it is turning out to be a comfortable and just as important, an efficient shave. No second or third passes to get the job done.
Cassette head and thick shaving creams can be a bit of a mess as the cream gets caught in the tight contraption. With hot water a bit off pressure, its an easy rinse.
I want to convey that using the right support products is key. The Every Man Jack shaving cream is a winner for my mug. Thick and creamy! Read that as: protection and lube! Their aftershave lotion is of the same caliber and together with the razor – its a beautiful thing!
Overall, the comfortable sturdy feel and shape of the handle make it a very pleasant razor to work with. The 6 blades head ensure a quick and efficient shave as you won’t be going over the same area multiple times.
